Arctic-1 (in collaboration with Nikolai Smirnov)
Live-cinema (audiovisual performance for video, flute, two voices and a vinyl disk), duration varies, 2015
The project was created as the results of the expedition to Taimyr peninsula in Arctic region of Russia, organized by the Laboratory of the geo cultural studies in the Arctic Institute (Yakutsk) at autumn 2014. Together with the artist Nikolai Smirnov in Dudinka and nomad camps around the gas industry village Tukhart a series of audio and video works were made, exploring the peculiarities of the local geoculture, mythology and the local space-time continuum. Collected audiovisual materials, along with field recordings and texts formed the basis of the work.
Video is performed live and is formed by the collision of the subjective experience of the author's lived through in the Arctic, it is manifested through the affective preparation of the materials, and documentary and quasi-documentary (symbolic performances) shootings. Key points: movement through the void, icing/chilblain, time as a measure of space, silence, arctic eros.
Editing of image streams takes place directly during demonstration of the video, followed by the reading of special Arctic texts. Historical and mythical. Video consists of two streams: direct documentary filming of movement and interaction of the expedition with the locality, represented linearly (video 8), and sights (gazing) or performances (symbolic) shootings, presented in random order (digital files). The streams are superimposed and alternate based on the scores, depending on what do the performer hears. Final image is
converted through the audio stream to almost undistinguishable state of total greyish white like arctic landscape during the "black blizzard".
The specially prepared guest musician Sasha Elina performs by video scores (musician sees unconverted video stream and has instructions on how to translate it into sound) music, locking sensuality in the emerging space-time. Preparedness comes through mandatory previewing, the day before the performance, of the book "Eternal birth" made based on the results of the expedition. The book exists in a single copy.
During the performance situation of gazing and listening in of spectators is important.
Video length varies by the internal sense of the musician. In the end, she turns on a song "Shaman" on the vinyl record of Alla Pugacheva "Mirror of the soul". With the end of the song performance space immerses into complete silence and darkness. Which structural connects with the beginning of the performance, when in the darkness of screening room, before turning on the video or musician and readers start to play, a song based on the poem of anarcho-bio-cosmist A. Yaroslavsky "To the star brother" and specially translated into Nenets language sounds. It connects the sight directed from center to Arctic and perception directed from Arctic to continent.
